Learning to Read is Difficult

The English language has a lot of different sounds and letter combinations to remember.

Recognising the sounds that letter combinations make can be difficult.

Trying to work the sounds out can be frustrating, so students lose confidence and have no enthusiasm for reading.

My Classes Rebuild Confidence

I cater for both children and adult learners.

All lessons are tailored to the needs of the individual.

I will help each student to learn the different sounds of the English language and the letter combinations that we use to produce these sounds.

We will learn to recognise the sounds when we see the letters, and how to write the sounds that we hear.

We will develop these skills slowly, initially reading and writing simple words, then building up to reading full sentences and short texts.

At all times, we will work at the student's pace, to ensure that they are comfortable with every stage.

Why I can Help

Teaching English to foreign learners has given me a unique insight into the difficulties students of all ages face with blending, decoding and encoding words.  This means that I am able to help native speakers - both children and adults - to develop the skills they need to read and write fluently.

My experience as a home educating parent has also shown me how frustrating it can become for both parents and children when a child struggles with a particular area of their education - sometimes, parents need to take a step back and let someone else help, to reduce the pressure on both parties.  Just this simple step can help the child to relax enough to grasp a difficult concept.

Whether you struggle with reading yourself, or have a child who is finding reading difficult, allow me to help.  I am a very patient teacher and will help to rebuild confidence in reading.

Areas Covered Include

  • Phonics - the sounds letters make
  • Blending - putting sounds together
  • Decoding - reading a word by recognising the sounds
  • Encoding - listening to sounds to write the word
  • International Phonetic Alphabet
  • How to use a dictionary
  • And more ...

My Teaching Style

I teach phonics and reading using traditional methods but when students wish to do so, I also use crafts in my lessons to help them to relax.  For example, we might practise creating the letters we are learning using clay, to help students get used to the shape of the letters in a more tactile way.

Lessons are tailored to the individual and taught at the student's pace, with no pressure to move forward until they are ready to do so.  By removing the pressure, students relax and become more confident about learning.

We will develop phonic skills to enable students to blend letters.  They will then be shown how to decode and encode simple words by themselves, which gives them a real sense of achievement and encourages them to want to learn more.

Students are taught that mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of - we all make mistakes and we learn from them, so we should embrace them as part of the learning process.

All students will be encouraged to participate in the lesson by focusing on things that interest them - we will discuss, then learn to read words relevant to those interests.  This will give students a greater desire to develop their reading skills.
