Learning English is Difficult

The English language has a lot of difficult words for children to remember.

Using and correctly saying new words is a challenge.

Often they become frustrated and lose enthusiasm for learning…

My Teaching Style

I use a gentle teaching style to help your children relax. They are encouraged to participate by focusing on things that interest them, so that they have a desire to build their language skills. Whether they have a passion for dinosaurs, computer games, drawing or origami, they are encouraged to share their interests with me. They are welcome to bring toys to class to show me, or demonstrate their drawing or origami skills during the lesson – all while using English to explain what they love and why.

A fear of making mistakes can prevent students from trying, so all children are taught that mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of – we all make mistakes and we learn from them, so we should embrace them as part of the learning process. Children are never told off for forgetting something that they have been taught previously, or for getting something wrong.

What does a Lesson Look Like?

I use a range of materials, so that lessons are tailored to each child’s needs. Younger children will learn to build on their phonic awareness, to enable them to decode words by themselves, which gives them a real sense of achievement and encourages them to want to learn more, while older children begin to lead conversations or give presentations on topics of their choice.

A typical lesson will begin with a short conversation about what the child has been doing – they may use this time to show me a picture or toy, or to demonstrate how to create a simple origami model. We then move on to look at the material we are working on that day, learning new vocabulary and grammar points as appropriate.

Sometimes, older children prefer to have a full conversation class, so we spend the entire lesson discussing the topic that they have chosen – this might be something they have been working on in school, a film they have seen, a book they have read or a trip they have been on, for example.

At all times, I am guided by the child: if they find the work too difficult, we change to a lower level material, if the work is too easy, we move to a higher level. If they are having a bad day – for example, if they’re very tired after school – then we take it more slowly and play some vocabulary building games to take the pressure off.
