My Teaching Style
I teach general English using traditional methods but I also encourage students to spend time talking about their hobbies and interests.
At beginner level, we will build on your phonic awareness, to enable you to decode words by yourselves. As you develop this skill, your confidence will grow.
At more advanced levels, we will work on your conversational skills, to give you the confidence to communicate in any situation, be it social or business.
I encourage you to remember that mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of – we all make mistakes and we learn from them, so we should embrace them as part of the learning process.
You will be encouraged to participate by focusing on things that interest you, so that you have a desire to build your language skills.
What does a Lesson Look Like?
I use a range of materials, so that lessons are tailored to each student’s needs. Beginner students develop their phonic awareness in order to start decoding words, giving a real sense of achievement, while more advanced learners can lead conversations or give presentations on topics of their choice.
A typical lesson will begin with a short conversation about what you have been doing – you may wish to share a hobby or information about your family with me. We then move on to look at the material we are working on that day, learning new vocabulary and grammar points as appropriate.
Some students prefer to have a full conversation class, so we spend the entire lesson discussing the topic that they have chosen – this might be something they have been working on, a family event, a film they have seen, a book they have read or a trip they have been on, for example.
At all times, I am guided by you: if you find the work too difficult, just let me know and we change to a lower level material, if the work is too easy, we can move to a higher level. If you are having a bad day, then we take it more slowly and try to take the pressure off, while still moving forward with your learning.
